It’s never too early to start reading to your baby. However, it can be a little tricky to get babies only a few months old to show interest in a book.

Books for infants 0-6 months have to be very engaging. This is because babies this young are a tough audience to read to, for a number of reasons:

  • they have a short attention span
  • it takes a few months for their eyes to properly focus
  • infants can’t distinguish between colors well

However, there are SO many benefits to reading to babies, and most of the time it’s just a matter of finding the right book. Check out this article to learn more about the benefits.

Here’s a list of some of the BEST books for infants 0-6 months to capture baby’s attention:

1. Black and White Board Book by Tana Hoban

This is the very first book I was able to get my daughter interested in. High-contrast, black and white images make it perfect for newborns. Plus, this book folds out accordion-style, making it great for tummy time. The images are every day objects, like bananas, keys, butterflies, etc. This makes them recognizable later on. They also vary in simplicity. Some pages show super simple geometric shapes, while others show more intricate detail. My daughter found this one absolutely mesmerizing.

2. Black and White High Contrast Baby Toys by Thremhoo.

This book does SO many things at once. It is black and white for high contrast, but also uses pops of red to add some bright color to catch baby’s eye. It’s also an accordion style book that can be used for tummy time, and it has velcro loops to hang it by. So, baby can look at it during tummy time or while in his crib, or anywhere else it can be fashioned. Better yet–it’s washable! Baby’s a spitter? No worries–just throw it in the wash. Some of the pages even have little pop-out pieces that baby can play with.

3. Fish Crinkle Book by Bebe Mondo

One of my daughter’s favorites! This one is great for on the go, because you can clip it to the car seat. This crinkle book is also washable and has so many neat features. The mirror on the last page is pretty big, which is SO fun because babies just love looking at themselves in the mirror. There are lots of little squiggly tactile things to play with, like octopus tentacles, crab claws, and a crinkly shark tail. There’s even a corner meant for your little teether to gnaw on.

4. Never Feed a Yeti Spaghetti by Make Believe Ideas Ltd.

Ah, a classic! This is truly a crowd pleaser. There is something about the felt teeth that babies just LOVE. They love poking their little fingers through the pages. The rhyming throughout the book, along with the felt cut-outs, really engages those little readers. Make Believe Ideas Ltd makes a TON of these engaging and interactive books that are just perfect for your new little one.

5. Never Touch the Sharks! by Rosie Greening

Another of my daughter’s personal faves. This book is great for little ones who really enjoy tactile books. Each page features different textures on the sharks, so there’s more than just one. It’s such a cute book with a fun story about sharks doing activities like camping, treasure hunts, getting ice cream, etc. If your little one loves sharks, this one is surely for them. This one is also rhyming, which keeps little listeners engaged.

6. Who Is It? by Cottage Door Press.

This is great for little snugglers. Not only is it a cloth book, but it’s soft and plush and cuddly! This one also has a mirror and lots of soft little flaps to play with, which encourages fine motor skills and hand coordination and keeps baby’s interest. Lots of woodland creatures make appearances in this one, which I personally love because it gets baby familiar with little critters they might see and recognize in person.

7. Are You There Little Fox by Sam Taplin.

One of MY personal favorites, and one of the first board books to really capture my daughter’s interest without needing extra tactile features (crinkling, texture, flaps, etc). This book is filled with GORGEOUS illustrations, and also has lots of woodland creatures to identify. It’s a good transition book between crinkle book and board book, because there are small cut-outs throughout the book that create a sense of dimension and act as an opportunity for baby to poke their little fingers through. This is part of the Little Peep Through Books by Usborne and they’re all amazing books for babies.

8. Always Hug a Unicorn by Rosie Greening

Colors, colors, everywhere! This book is SO fun with interesting textures on every page. This is another book by Make Believe Ideas Ltd, and I just love each and every one of their books. They’re all super colorful and tactile with lots of different textures, animals, and concepts. This is a win especially for all unicorn lovers.

9. Peek-a-Who? by Nina Laden

If your little one enjoys peek-a-boo (and who doesn’t?), they’re going to love this one. This book is packed with clever rhymes and simple, recognizable pictures. The cut-out windows that baby can peek through are a HOOT (pun intended). From “peek-a-ZOO!” to “peek-a-BOO” and “peek-a-MOO!” baby will just love playing peek-a-boo with this book.

10. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr.

Easily one of the most beloved classics, this board book is everyone’s favorite! There is something about this book that babies just go nuts over. They can’t get enough of it. It could be the big, bright, colorful and simple images contrasted against the white background. It could be the simple, predictable rhyming pattern. It could be the animals. Whatever it is, this one’s here to stay as a favorite that will get read over and over and over again.

If you find yourself struggling to capture your infant’s attention with a book, don’t worry. As they get older, they will most likely show more interest.

In the meantime, keep trying out new books! Once you find that one book that baby enjoys, it will do wonders to help foster a love of books.

Good luck, Mama!

  1. Oh how I love this post! Reading is so very important from a young age! I love so many of the books you have suggested and need to try a couple that we have not read before. I am a Mimi (Grandma) that always worked to instill the love of reading in my children….now we are doing that with the grandbabies!

  2. Great suggestions. I absolutely love books and sharing them to all ages. At holidays I always gave nieces and nephews a toy, outfit, and book. These book suggestions are great for birthdays and Christmas gifts. Thanks for sharing!
